One app for a team spread across the rainforest

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway takes visitors deep into the UNESCO Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest, leaving no footprint behind. It's been operating for 31 years, family-owned by fifth-generation Cairns locals.

The challenge

Skyrail’s teams operate largely independently across four locations, spanning Finance, HR and IT, trade-qualified engineers, reservations staff, cableway crews, environmental rangers, retail, café and housekeeping staff, as well as a marketing team that frequently travels internationally.

Communication used to be flat and manual, says Liz Alexander.

"We used to spend a lot of time putting together a quarterly newsletter, printed with all its pretty pictures, and staple it to pay slips. Then we went to TV screens in the lunchrooms. It was all very flat and one-dimensional before we brought it into the digital landscape."

— Liz Alexander, HR Manager

Why Blink

Two things pushed the search for something better. Workplace from Meta was being retired, and the business was paying for a stack of separate tools, each with its own cost. The goal was to replace them all with one app that could do the lot.

"We were using so many different software platforms, all with their own costs. We wanted to see if one subscription could meet all our needs. After months of searching and shortlisting, we got down to Blink."

The results

99% activation, and around 89% engaging regularly. Because the team had used a social-style feed before, the move was seamless, and nobody wanted to miss out.

"A big part of the Skyrail culture is actually using the platform. We work in this beautiful rainforest, so it could be cassowaries with their babies walking up to the station, and the team shares it. Our ranger team explains why it's the father looking after the chick. It just adds to the culture."

Even the radio does its bit.

"Everyone's connected by radio, and I'm forever hearing supervisors tell their team, don't forget to check Blink today for your latest updates."

— Marni Cadd, Communications Officer

Recognition that lives by their values. Skyrail built its own recognition app inside Blink, called Send a Good Vibe, and it's become one of the team's most-used features, with appreciation flowing peer to peer and from managers to staff.

"We created postcards that match our core values, so staff recognize each other peer to peer, and management to staff. Every fortnight we put the nominees in a hat and give tourism vouchers. It's great for engagement, that in-the-moment feedback when someone's done something well."

Safety on a schedule everyone follows. Each month the team runs Take Five for Safety through the Hub, with a short video giving a high-level overview of the theme.

A $90 million rebuild, with the team along for the journey. Skyrail is mid-way through upgrading its entire cableway, a multi-year project with diggers and 50 contractors on site.

"Blink gives us the ability to communicate and avoid uncertainty on a project that will take years. We share the construction phases, videos, and photos, so staff feel they're on the journey and their jobs are safe. It's more excitement than fear, which is great."
